“I built the IROD Facilitation Suite when I was an assistant principal writing my PHD dissertation. The first time I used it, it changed the course of our school board meeting. And I have used it every day since rising to superintendent chair and beyond.
For 12 years, I managed a leadership team of 29 directors and principals. I navigated dysfunctional boards, passed a bond referendum in a down market, managed over a thousand conflicts – from student fights in the hallway to union negotiations. I’ve had 3AM nights and I’ve made expensive mistakes. I understand the pressure of leading an organization with high-risk decisions that impact many stakeholders.
I’d been studying the science of decision-making since my dissertation research, and created the IROD method 25 years ago. Since then, I’ve discovered something every leader eventually discovers the hard way: the problem isn’t the people in the room. It’s the process they’re using to make decisions.
When everyone follows these simple four questions — in the right order — good teams produce great outcomes. Dysfunctional boards become functional. Conflicts that have been stuck for months resolve in a single session. Problems stop escalating. Leaders start hitting more home runs.
